Rangers boss Steven Gerrard hoping Steven Davis signs new deal

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard says he hopes Steven Davis commits his future to the club.

The 36-year-old midfielder was named man of the match as Rangers beat Kilmarnock 1-0 on Saturday.

Ryan Jack scored the only goal, firing home a superb winner to seal another three points for Gerrard's side as they continue their assault on the Scottish Premiership title.

Reflecting on the contribution of Davis and Jack, Gerrard said: "They're obviously very different but Davis was magnificent today, his anticipation and the way he controls games.

"He allows us to keep going in terms of wave after wave, he plays with real authority and leadership but in a quiet way.

"He sets standards on a daily basis that everyone else follows, so I've been absolutely delighted with Steven."

Davis returned to Rangers from Southampton in January 2019 in an initial short-term deal.

He signed a one-year extension to his contract in December that year which runs to the end of this season.

Gerrard is determined to retain the services of the Northern Ireland captain, and says the ball remains in Davis' court.

"I just hope that he plays on next season, but that will be his decision that we respect," he added.
