Rangers boss and Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard 'targeted' by Bristol City

Steven Gerrard has emerged as a surprise target for Bristol City.

The Championship side parted ways with manager Lee Johnson earlier this month after going nine games without a win.

Now the club's billionaire owner Steve Lansdown is reportedly keen to replace him with Steven Gerrard.

According to The Express, Gerrard is on Lansdown's shortlist alongside Chris Hughton, Lee Bowyer and Ryan Lowe.

They claim, however, that the Liverpool legend is the man Lansdown believes can spearhead a promotion push.

Gerrard, who arrived at Rangers in 2018, signed a contract extension in December that ties him to Ibrox until 2024.

Rangers are preparing for the new Scottish Premiership season, which begins for them on August 1 with a trip to Pittodrie to face Aberdeen.

Gerrard's side beat Hamilton Accies 2-1 in a bounce game on Friday afternoon, thanks to goals from new signing Calvin Bassey and Alfredo Morelos.

Rangers will now head to France to take part in the Trophee Veolia where they will play hosts Lyon at 7.45pm on Thursday, 16 July and Nice at 5.15pm on Saturday, 18 July.
