Rangers Betfred Cup opponents Falkirk suffer double coronavirus blow

Two Falkirk players have tested positive for COVID-19 in the lead up to Sunday's Betfred Cup clash with Rangers, the League One side has confirmed.

Steven Gerrard's men face the Bairns at the Falkirk Stadium on Sunday evening, but their opponents will be missing at least two player after they returned positive results in the latest round of testing.

No other players are thought to have been affected by the tests and both players are now self-isolating.

The match is not understood to be under threat, with the SPFL still confident it will go ahead.

A Falkirk statement said: "Falkirk Football Club can today confirm that after our round of testing ahead of Sunday’s Betfred Cup fixture against Rangers, two members of the playing staff have tested positive for COVID-19.

"The players who returned positive results will self-isolate in line with Scottish Government guidelines. We wish both players all the best and look forward to welcoming them back to The Falkirk Stadium when it is safe to do so.

"In accordance with Scottish football’s Return to Playing Protocols, the Joint Response Group has been informed of the situation. We have also provided the Scottish Government’s expert group with the necessary information relating to training ground data and manifests.

"We are pleased to report that no further individuals have been identified as close contacts but we have reminded the coaches and playing staff to be extra vigilant and ensure all guidance is adhered to ahead of the weekend’s fixture."
