Rangers being humbled at home the highlight for departing Hamilton Accies star McGowan

Aaron McGowan says captaining Hamilton Accies to an historic win over Rangers at Ibrox will stay with him forever after he left the club yesterday.

The 23-year-old right-back joined Accies from Morecambe in 2018 and has gone on to make over 50 appearances for the South Lanarkshire outfit, including in the 1-0 win over Gers in March when David Moyo's striker stunned Steven Gerrard's side.

The Liverpudlian has turned down the offer to renew his contract at New Douglas Park.

Last night he confirmed his exit on Twitter, thanking the Accies fans and highlighting the club's famous night at Ibrox.

He said: "Captaining these bunch of lads for the time I did was nothing short of an honour.

"I done that here, captaining the team to historic wins in front of 50,000 people will stay with me forever."

He added: "From winning goal of the month, to 90th minute equalisers, to derby goals, to last day survival and to have started every single win we've had since I joined the club 2 years ago, and not one without is a stat I'm proud of."

McGowan helped Accies secure their Premiership status this season, but is one of a number of key players from that campaign who will not be returning.

Last week we revealed Alex Gogic has also turned down a new deal and striker Mickel Miller also doesn't make the 29-man list gaffer Brian Rice is taking forward into the new season.

Accies will return to training next week as Covid-19 restrictions ease and the 2020/21 season is scheduled to kick-off as originally planned on August 1.
