Rangers B team suffer Dundee United thrashing as Lawrence Shankland makes his mark

Rangers' B team were thumped 4-1 by a full strength Dundee United at Auchenhowie this afternoon.

Manager Steven Gerrard has spoken about the need to trim the fat from his squad and is unlikely to have been impressed by the result.

With the first team taking on Motherwell at Ibrox in the evening, a B team took on Micky Mellon's side in a bounce game.

The Rangers squad included a number of first team players, with Calvin Bassey, Jordan Jones, Greg Stewart and Greg Docherty all starting the match.

It was the visitors who took the lead though, with a familiar face doing the damage, former Gers man Nicky Clark converting a penalty after just six minutes.

The hosts soon levelled things though, with Josh McPake scoring on a Greg Stewart cutback.

It was all square at the break but United established their supremacy in the second half.

Quickfire goals from Calum Butcher and Lawrence Shankland put them back in the lead.

Dundee United ensured it would be a rout with 10 minutes to play as American midfielder Dillon Powers slotted home a fourth.

Terrors boss Mellon was delighted with the performance as he continues to assess his new charges and how they adapt to his demands.

He said: “It was another worthwhile run-out with some well-worked goals.

“We still have work to do ahead of the new campaign but we will strive to get better in every session between now and the Premiership season.

“It was another opportunity where everyone got minutes and the young lads again showed up well. All in all, I am pleased.”
