Rangers boss Steven Gerrard watches on as Ibrox kids beaten by Ayr United

Ayr United booked a last 16 trip to Alloa Athletic in the SPFL Trust Trophy with a 3-0 victory over Rangers' kids at Dumbarton tonight.

Daire O'Connor, Joe Chalmers and Markus Fjortoft were on target as caretaker boss Jim Duffy notched his second win on the spin.

United named a strong line-up for the clash, with Michael Moffat starting his first game of the season up front.

And although Ayr were made to work during a hard fought 90 minutes, they ultimately proved too strong for the young Gers.

Rangers began brightly with Charlie Lindsay seeing an effort blocked before sending another shot just wide of the target.

And it took until five minutes before the break for Ayr to hit the front with a well taken strike from O'Connor, who fired home after Moffat had flicked on from Andy Murdoch's cross.

That settled Ayr and O'Connor rattled the post just after half time as they attempted to put the game out of sight.

The game was then settled as a contest on 74 minutes when Joe Chalmers curled a beautiful 25 yard free kick beyond the despairing dive of Kieran Wright.

And Ayr wrapped up their victory soon after when sub Steven Bradley's corner was met by Fjortoft who made no mistake to make it 3-0.
