Rangers B shocked by East Kilbride moment of 'magic' as boss savours dramatic win and explains controversial red card

East Kilbride manager Chris Aitken has hailed match winner Chris Erskine after his memorable effort sealed a 2-1 win over Rangers 'B'.

Kilby were up against it in the second half, with Rangers ahead and experienced midfielder James Stevenson sent off before the hour mark.

But Neil McLaughlin scored a sweet strike before former Partick Thistle man Erskine lobbed the ball into the net from well outside the penalty box.

It moves EK three points off the Lowland League's second spot and into the top four on goal difference. They have won 11 of their last 12 games in all competitions.

Aitken believes the match was a brilliant advert for the fifth tier of Scottish football.

He said: "It was a great spectacle for the league. There was some really good action. It was two good teams trying to give it their all. In the first half, it was back and forward.

"Both teams were playing on the front foot and wanted to play attacking football. From a neutral point of view it would have been good to watch, but I don't know if I enjoyed it!

"I've always said that we've got quality in this squad. When we get the odd chance, something magic can happen. Neil McLaughlin started it.

"We were absolutely fantastic in the second half. The goal from Chris to win it is a fitting way to win any game of football.

"The finish from Chris is different class. When he lifted it over and dinked the goalkeeper, it took an eternity to hit the back of the net.

"With guys like Chris Erskine, they have been outstanding for me. I've told them that and I can't thank them enough for their efforts and how they are going about their business."

While pleased overall with the day's work, Aitken admits he was initially bemused by Stevenson's dismissal for bad language. But they'll take it on the chin.

He added: "With James, it's perhaps one of those things when in other games that is passed by. A red card was given but to a man we dug in.

"It's one of those. Some you see, some you don't. James has said something to the linesman and he's reacted to it. But by the law of the game, the ref has to send him off. We accept it."
