Rangers B handed SPFL Trust Trophy lifeline as Ayr United charged over ineligible players

Rangers B could be handed a reprieve in the SPFL Trust Trophy as Ayr United have admitted to including two ineligible players in their squad for the second round clash.

The Championship side team made short work of the Ibrox B side running out 3-0 winners in the second round.

They had youngsters Kinlay Bilham and Alex Jeanes on the bench however and the duo were ineligible as they are officially out on loan with both players coming on as second half substitutes.

Their inclusion in the squad means they have breached SPFL rules and the governing body have confirmed an investigation.

If found guilty, the outcome could be anything from a fine to the result being overturned.

Ayr are due to face Alloa away in the next round on 9th October during the next international break but it could now be Rangers B running out at the Indodrill.

An SPFL statement reads: "Ayr United have confirmed to the SPFL that they included Kinlay Bilham and Alex Jeanes in Tuesday’s SPFL Trust Trophy second-round tie against Rangers B at the C&G Systems Stadium when they were on temporary transfers to West of Scotland League clubs Irvine Meadow XI and Girvan respectively.

"Both players entered the field as 81st-minute substitutes in a match Ayr United won 3-0.

"As a result, Ayr United have been charged with breaching SPFL Rules and Regulations and the SPFL has arranged a disciplinary hearing for Monday September 20."
