Rangers apologise to Celtic star Scott Brown over fan's vile Ibrox taunt about his sister

Rangers have apologised to Celtic captain Scott Brown after he was the target of sickening abuse over the death of his sister.

Ibrox managing director Stewart Robertson reached out to the midfielder yesterday to say sorry for the disgusting taunt.

The abuse was filmed outside Ibrox after Sunday’s Old Firm derby.

A 15-year-old Rangers fan was and charged over the sickening abuse.

In a video clip taken outside Ibrox stadium, Brown is seen stopping in his tracks as he makes his way on to Celtic’s team bus.

A Rangers fan can be heard taunting him over the death of his sister Fiona, who passed away in 2008 aged 21 following a battle against cancer.

The clip went viral on Monday night.

Rangers bosses yesterday contacted Brown to apologise with Robertson conveying his disgust and regret over the shocking incident.

Rangers moved quickly to offer Brown their support, with Robertson making a personal phone call to the Hoops skipper while also apologising in writing in an email to the 34-year-old.

Brown is understood to have been heartened by Robertson’s actions as well as the overwhelming response of fans from both side’s of the Glasgow divide.

Supporters of clubs all around the country rushed to condemn the vile outburst.

Celtic’s hierarchy are believed to be completely satisfied with the manner in which Rangers have handled the situation.

The Ibrox club dished out a life ban to the culprit, who can’t be named due to his age, within hours of the clip appearing online.

A source said: “Scott was obviously deeply upset and angry about what was said but he has taken a great deal of comfort from the support he has received from all across the board over the last 24 hours.

“He didn’t want an issue to be made of this but, now that it has become public knowledge, he is grateful for support he’s received from all over and the swift and sincere response he’s had from Rangers as a club.”

Yesterday at Celtic’s Lennoxtown HQ, Brown’s team-mate Christopher Jullien said: “I heard about it. I didn’t see it, but for me it is just ugly.

“I don’t know much about the past of Broony but I hear about it and it’s just forbidden. It doesn’t have a place in the stadium or out of the stadium. Simple.

“He is our leader. We would do anything for him, for sure.”

A police spokeswoman said: “A 15-year-old male has been charged and the matter was referred to the Early and Effective Interventions Co-ordinator.”

One of several Rangers fans who were wrongly identified as the culprit on social media headed to Ibrox yesterday to ask for help clearing his name before the arrest was confirmed.

His dad told the Record: “He’s very worried and is getting death threats.”
