Rangers and the Scottish Premiership away day fans factor that shows revealing contrast in fortunes

Steven Gerrard issued a rallying cry to the Rangers fans ahead of their return leg against Malmo.

And the support could be vital on a high-stakes Champions League night as the Light Blues look to overturn a 2-1 deficit from the first leg in Sweden.

The raucous Ibrox crowd has played its part in so many famous Europe victories for Rangers over the years.

Under Gerrard alone there have been some memorable games, including the incredible two-goal comeback against Braga two seasons ago.

Yet when it comes to Scottish Premiership away games the statistics show that Rangers might have benefited most from empty stadiums.

The Light Blues went down to a shock defeat against Dundee United at Tannadice on Saturday to end a 40-game unbeaten league run.

That took in the 38-game Invincible league run of last season played out entirely in front of empty stadiums which was sandwiched between the victory at Ross County shortly before the pandemic halted football and the Scottish Premiership opener against Livingston this season.

Of the last seven games Rangers have played in front of supporters they have lost five - Hearts, Hamilton, Bayer Leverkusen, Malmo and Dundee United - and won two.

However, if we look purely at away Scottish Premiership games during Gerrard’s time in charge then they have a better win ratio when the stands were empty.

Of their 19 undefeated away games in the league last season, the Light Blues won 13 and drew six.

In the previous 34 league fixtures on the road and Saturday’s trip to Tannadice, Gers won 19, drew eight and lost eight.

The win ratio is 68 per cent without crowds compared to 54 per cent with fans and shows quite a difference.

Teams coped differently when Covid hit last season and it was a huge psychological test but Rangers appeared to cope best with the testing circumstances.
