Rangers and Sports Direct back in court again over kit deal

Rangers and Sports Direct are back in court in London today.

It's the latest installment in the battle between the and Mike Ashley's firm which is being heard in front of Lionel Persey QC at the .

The judge is expected to examine the positions of the sports giant and the club about whether the issue can be settled regarding a kit deal.

is facing a bill of millions after Sports Direct said it was denied the opportunity to bid for a £10million three-year kit deal.

A legal judgement found Sports Direct (SDIR) should have been allowed to match an offer made by current kit manufacturer for the lucrative deal on producing replica strips and other items.

In July, Judge Lionel Persey QC concluded bosses at  Rangers  had made the new agreement without giving Sports Direct, which had a retail deal with the Ibrox club that was expiring, a chance to match the other firm's offer.

Sports Direct argued that the terms of the existing contract meant Rangers had to give the opportunity to compete with any new agreement.

The judge also took issue with Rangers’ bid to limit any damages they may have to pay to £1million, which could have huge financial implications for the Ibrox club.

Following the judgement in July, Rangers said in a statement: " would like to reassure supporters that matters concerning the litigation currently being brought against it by SDI Retail Services Limited are not as reported.

"Rangers was disappointed by the terms of the recent court judgment but respects the decision of the court and will meet any financial award made by the court.

"No such award has yet been decided and at this stage does not even know how much will be sought. Contrary to some reports, the judge has not determined that the contractual cap on damages will not apply.

"Rangers would also like to reassure supporters that no steps have been taken to stop supporters being able to buy this season’s replica kits."
