Rangers and Norwich City stars absence is a huge blow to Scotland, says ex-boss Craig Brown

Craig Brown insists that Ryan Jack and Kenny McLean will be massive losses to Scotland ahead of EURO 2020.

The midfield duo played important roles in the qualification process and would have been certainties for Steve Clarke's 26-man squad had they not sustained injuries.

Rangers star Jack was ruled out with a calf injury that requires surgery and the 29 year-old would have been a guaranteed starter this summer.

Cambuslang star McLean sustained a serious knee injury in Norwich City's final-day draw against Barnsley and the 29 year-old is a valued member of Clarke's squad

Former Scotland boss Brown is the last man to lead the nation to a major international tournament - the 1998 World Cup in France.

The 80 year-old knows the importance of having experience within the Scotland squad and he is a massive fan of the injured midfield duo.

"Ryan Jack is an outstanding player," Brown said to Lanarkshire Live in our exclusive Euro 2020 interview.

"He will be a miss, there is absolutely no doubt about that and Kenny McLean as well.

"I remember when we got the penalty decider and Kenny was taking the decider in the semi-final.

"I get it in my head that a left-footed player is a better penalty taker, I don't know why I think that because I've got no justification.

"I just feel that a left-footed player strikes the ball sweetly and Kenny hits the ball beautifully.

"I thought this is great, Kenny was trusted with the responsibility and he will score. It's the same with his passing - it's terrific.

"We are going to miss these two because they have real quality.

"We've got energy, we've got enthusiasm and we've got [Stuart] Armstrong who can get up and down the park. So can [John} McGinn, [Ryan] Christie and [Scott] McTominay, if he plays in midfield.

"There is a lot of quality there. We've got good, good players in the middle of the park but McLean and Jack would have definitely enhanced our team."
