Rangers and Motherwell legend Tom Forsyth dies aged 71

Tributes have been paid to Rangers and Motherwell legend Tom Forsyth after he died at the aged of 71.

'Jaws', as he was affectionately known, passed away on Friday evening.

Forsyth was signed by Motherwell boss Bobby Hewitt in 1967 and he spent five years at Fir Park.

His displays in claret and amber earned him a move to Rangers in 1972, where he would became serial winner, claiming three league titles, four Scottish Cups and two League Cups under iconic gaffers Jock Wallace and John Greig.

Forsyth, who won 22 caps for his country, would later go on to be Motherwell's assistant manager under Tommy McLean and had a spell in the dugout himself at Dunfermline in 1982.

Motherwell paid tribute to their legendary player last night. Their statement read: "We are saddened to hear of the death of Tam Forysth.

"Tam was brought to the club by Bobby Howitt in 1967 from Stonehouse Violet and at that stage of his career played as a wing-half or inside-forward.

"The boyhood Motherwell fan made his debut in October 1967 in a 3-1 win over Stirling Albion and would make 150 league appearances for the club, before joining Rangers in October 1972.

"By the time of his transfer to Ibrox, Forsyth had already made his international debut in a European Championship qualifier away to Denmark in 1971 and would go on to amass 22 caps for Scotland.

"‘Jaws’, as he would affectionately be known, became recognised as uncompromising defender at Ibrox and, when he bid farewell to Rangers in 1982, he had played more than 200 league games, securing silverware in treble-winning sides.

"Latterly the assistant to Tommy McLean at Fir Park, he was the number two during a prolific 10-year spell.

"With the club winning the First Division title in 1984/85, he would also be in the dugout for the 1991 Scottish Cup success and the Steelmen’s first foray into European competition.

"A third-placed finish in 1993/94 in the Premier Division also came during his spell, a year Motherwell came within just four points of winning the league title.

"Our thoughts are with his family at this time."

A statement from Rangers read: "Everyone at Rangers Football Club is sad to learn of the news that our former player, Tom Forsyth, has passed away this evening.

"We pass on our heartfelt condolences to the entire family circle at this difficult time."

Motherwell chief executive, Alan Burrows, told fans on social media the club intend to hold a minute's silence before next week's Lanarkshire Derby at home to Hamilton, where the club also intend to mark the recent passing of two Ancell Babes, Pat Quinn and Willie Hunter.
