Rangers and Ianis Hagi hailed by French media as Lyon suffer 'Scottish cold shower'

Rangers secured a 2-0 win over Lyon as they step up their preparations for the return of the Premiership.

An own goal by Marcelo and a fine goal from Ianis Hagi secured an impressive win at the Groupama Stadium.

While the hosts didn't have a full team out, the side Steven Gerrard 's men faced are no mugs and could reach the Champions League quarter-finals if they can hold on to a 1-0 lead over Juventus.

With a cup final against Paris Saint-Germain also still to come this was a big game for the Ligue 1 side, with plenty of attention on the match.

Here's how the French media saw the game.

In their match report L'Équipe wrote: "Lyon managed a convincing start, supported by high and aggressive pressing, some good attacking sequences and Maxence Caqueret's beautiful vision of the game.

"But on a corner, then on the counter-attack, the Lyonnais twice paid for their lack of attention and aggressiveness, which benefited Ianis Hagi, the scorer of a double.

"That gradually disrupted the Lyon machine, losing confidence and certainty despite numerical superiority thanks to the expulsion of Ryan Kent, guilty of a small slap on Marcelo."

Le Progres declared that "a too-naive OL were subjected to a Scottish cold shower".

In their match report they praised Ianis Hagi's strike that made it 2-0, noting "the son of the great Gheorghe Hagi learned a couple of things from his dad".

However, the newspaper was scathing of Ryan Kent's red card, writing: "On a collision between Marcelo and Kent, the latter was returned to the dressing room. Who started it? Regardless, the scuffling of adolescents has no place in these kind of games."

Lyon were criticised for their "rather boring" play against a Rangers side playing "a simple and committed game".

France Football felt that OL "failed to contain Ianis Hagi" while Topmercato wrote that they "could not manage to overcome the attentiveness of the Scottish club".

RMC Sport called it "a lacklustre defeat for the Lyonnais" in "a match that will not reassure Rudi Garcia, just over two weeks from the Coupe de La Ligue final against PSG".

They felt that Rangers' two goals in four minutes were "very harsh, given the start of the game" but lamented "the OL players never returned to the match".

A certain Romanian star was praised by Eurosport, who wrote that Lyon were "undermined by the twirling Ianis Hagi... on his first two forays into the Lyon final third, Hagi made the difference every time".

It was noted that Garcia put out "far from the standard team" but "despite good pressing and good intentions in the opening minutes the Gones showed their limitations".

MadeInFoot went for a pun, declaring in their headline "Lyon submit to the law of the Glasgow Rangers".

As with most French observers the website felt "everything had started rather well" until the two Rangers goals, but criticised the reaction to the red card.

They wrote: "(It was a) red card that in the end didn't disturb the Scottish team too much.

"Indeed, despite clear domination in terms of possession, Olympique Lyonnais struggled to be really dangerous and even needed a rescue act from Youssouf Koné on his line to prevent the gap from widening."

The match report concludes that Lyon put in "a disappointing performance" and will need to bounce back against "Glasgow's other great club".

SoFoot were perhaps most scathing of all.

In their match report they lamented: "This Olympique Lyonnais is not really convincing, even more so if they gift goals to their opponent".

Marcelo was criticised for his defending on both goals before "Kent was dismissed for giving Marcelo a small slap as a thank you".

They conclude: "This kind of performance isn't going to make Juventus tremble".
