Rangers and Celtic warned of seismic Champions League rule change as away goals axe could be wielded this week

UEFA are considering abolishing the away goals rule - with a meeting on Friday potentially spelling the end for a rule that has been part of European competition since 1965.

It comes after the rule caused controversy after its use during the Covid-19 pandemic, where several Europa League and Champions League ties were played at neutral venues despite the other leg being played at a home stadium.

But it has long been a bone of contention for some clubs as it leads to away teams gaining a competitive advantage if a tie goes to extra-time.

Earlier this season, Juventus were eliminated from the Champions League on away goals despite having to play 30 extra minutes at home in the second leg, with the rule working against them.

The Times are now reporting that a UEFA meeting on Friday will gauge support for the rule which was first introduced in the European Cup 56 years ago.

And if member clubs decide they no longer want the rule to stand, then the governing body will put plans into place to abolish it altogether starting from this Friday.

UEFA previously considered a 'hybrid' approach, where away goals would not count in extra-time, but plans were shot down out of fears they were too confusing.

The news comes as Scotland prepares to have five representatives in European competition next season.

Rangers and Celtic will be Scotland's representatives in Champions League qualifying while St Johnstone go into the Europa League and Hibs and Aberdeen enter the new Europa Conference League.

The away goals rule has cost Scottish sides in the past as Rangers exited the UEFA Cup on away goals in 2006 while Liverpool beat Celtic on the same grounds in the 1996-97 competition.

Aberdeen went out to Bohemian FC after a 2-1 home defeat in 2000 - though the away goals rule did help them through against FC Dnipro in 2007 and most recently against Macedonian side Shkendija in 2015.
