Rangers and Celtic 'wanted' in British Super League plot after European breakaway collapse

A bid to expand the Premier League reportedly hopes to lure Rangers and Celtic south of the border to form a 'Super League'

The European Super League is in tatters after a host of clubs pulled out of the controversial set-up with supporters blasting the division as a cash-grab.

However, it is claimed that the Premier League sides who walked away from the new-look league are still calling for reform - and hope to add the Glasgow giants to the mix.

The Scottish Sun report that the English clubs hope Rangers and Celtic will join an "enlarged Premier League including the Old Firm" and that it would be "backed by Fifa, Uefa and the UK Government" in contrast to to the European breakaway.

In addition to the plan to tempt the Premiership duo, one other idea is an end of season top four play-off, similar to that in rugby union and rugby league.

It appears to be the next move from the big six in England to overhaul the set-up after the massive ESL misstep.

Amid a furious backlash from fans, governing bodies and rival clubs, Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham withdrew one by one.

Juventus chief Andrea Agnelli admitted the Super League is dead in the water.
