Rangers and Celtic's Scottish Cup clash opens up draw, insists Motherwell's Steven Lawless

Steven Lawless wants Motherwell to find form at the perfect time for a Scottish Cup run.

The tournament schedule is condensed this year and the 30 year-old hopes that the format can favour the Steelmen.

With their Premiership status effectively secured, Motherwell are strong favourites for their fourth round clash against Morton at Fir Park on Saturday.

“Obviously it’s a different set-up this year with the Scottish Cup,” Lawless added. “The games are coming thick and fast so it’ll feel like a short tournament but hopefully we can go on a good run and go as far as we can.”

“It’s obviously big. We’ve not had a great season and the boys know that, especially after the season they had last year.

“It’s been a difficult season to take so putting a cup run together just puts a little bit of a shine on the season and takes away a bit of tension from the form in the league.

“It’s been a bit of a stop, start season for myself and the team. Even since the gaffer arrived, we’ve had spells where we’ve been winning and putting in good performances then we’ve had patchy stages.

“We’ve spoken about how we need to put a run together and be consistent. There’s no better time to get that consistency with the way the Scottish Cup is this season.”

If Motherwell beat Morton, they’ll set up a quarter-final clash with either Hibernian or Stranraer.

The fourth round draw pitted champions Rangers against fierce rivals Celtic which means one of the favourites will be knocked out and Lawless hopes Motherwell can take advantage.

“You always hope for that little bit of luck and that’s what we’ve had. I’m not saying taking anything away from the teams we’ve got because they’ll be hard games.

“There’s obviously games in there where they’d rather play each other and hopefully we can worry about ourselves.

“We need to take it game by game and hopefully we are in the next stage of the draw when it’s done,” Lawless added.
