Rangers and Celtic referee conspiracy debunked as radio caller forced into humbling climbdown

Much has been made of officiating in Scottish football in recent weeks.

Whether it was Celtic's heavily debated penalty against St Mirren, Devante Cole's would-be red card against the Hoops, or retrospective bans dished out to Alfredo Morelos and Kemar Roofe, everyone has an opinion and no-one can seem to agree.

But while fans and pundits alike have been up in arms to explain the recent uptick in controversial decisions, one caller on Clyde 1's Superscoreboard thought he had the answer.

Kenny from King's Park called up the popular radio show to pose the theory that referees are purposely avoiding big decisions in games avoiding Rangers and Celtic - instead leaving it to the compliance officers to sort out after the fact.

He suggested that the significance of the season means that the SFA could have secretly moved to avoid game-changing red cards that could have a lasting impact on the title race.

He said: "I might be about to cause outrage on both sides of the Glasgow divide here.

"But it's such a big season for Celtic going for Ten In A Row, and Rangers, going for 55, stopping the ten and winning their first title in nine years.

"Could it be that internally referees have been told, because there's so much at stake, to avoid giving red cards in big situations, and go with a yellow if they're not sure?

"And then it can be reviewed after the match, and if the decision was wrong, they can admit as much."

The caller's claims were put under the microscope by Mark Wilson and Gordon Dalziel, who reached the consensus that it was a little far-fetched.

The pundits believed doing so would have 'opened up another can of worms' for behind the scenes decision-makers, and created more problems than it solved.

And Kenny, good sport that he is, took his telling on the chin.

When given the chance to have the final word, he said: "Actually, that was one of those where I believed it, but knew when it was coming out that it was a load of rubbish.

"Thanks for having me on!"
