Rangers and Celtic Premier Sports Cup dates sweat as ScotRail strike plan sparks travel chaos fears

Football fans could face travel chaos for next month’s Premier Sports Cup semi-final clashes at Hampden if ScotRail workers extend their long-running Sunday strike action.

The League Cup last four clashes are due to take place at the National Stadium on the weekend of November 20 and 21.

Holders St Johnstone face Celtic while Rangers are up against Hibs with the SPFL still to confirm dates for the two ties.

However, Hibs or St Johnstone supporters could face major issues getting to Glasgow if the current rail strike continues.

Workers at Scotrail are stepping up their strikes after ticket examiners joined train conductors in a vote for action calling for pay justice and equality.

Conductors have been involved in a seven-month pay struggle with Scotrail operator Abellio — the Dutch government’s state-owned rail company.

The Rail, Maritime and Transport union (RMT) is consulting its members over strikes in November during the two-week United Nations Cop26 climate change conference in Glasgow.

And that would also clash with the Premier Sports Cup semi-finals and cause huge disruption for fans travelling outside of Glasgow.

Hibs would be expected to bring a sizeable support from the capital and would be worst affected if their clash was on the Sunday.

Labour transport spokesperson Neil Bibby recently told MSPs: “Industrial relations on Scotland’s railways are at all-time low.

“That’s a damning indictment of [ScotRail operator] Abellio’s treatment of key workers who kept Scotland moving and a damning indictment of this Government too.

"They are leading Scotland into Cop26 with growing unrest on the railways, and the prospect of strikes bringing Glasgow to a halt.”
