Rangers and Celtic plus Premiership clubs handed huge transfer boost as work permit exemption keeps foreign player door open

Scottish clubs have been handed a huge transfer market boost as it's confirmed that an exemption to work permit rules will continue permanently.

The likes of Celtic and Rangers could previously sign players from the European Union with no restrictions, helping players such as Henrik Larsson and Ronald de Boer come to Scotland.

After Brexit though new restrictions were imposed, with players required to have played international football and be playing in a certain standard of league.

For Premiership clubs that could have been disastrous, potentially stopping the next Virgil van Dijk from arriving on these shores.

In the summer a compromise was found whereby clubs could apply to a special exemptions panel which allowed clubs to seek a work permit for overseas players who do not meet the strict criteria of the points-based system.

That was due to close after the summer transfer window but, following joint action from the SFA and SPFL the UK government has agreed to make the system permanent, including in the January transfer window.

SPFL chief executive Neil Doncaster said: "Given the significant number of overseas players who enhance our league, and Scotland’s relatively small size in comparison to other nations, it was absolutely imperative that we were able to convince the UK Government to maintain the exemptions panel.

“Failure to do so would have dramatically compromised the competitiveness of Scottish clubs, particularly when playing in European competitions, and it is fantastic news for our game that we have managed to secure such a crucial agreement with the UK government.

“It is no exaggeration to say that this was one of the most pivotal issues for our clubs and I am absolutely delighted that we have managed to secure this ongoing arrangement.

"The alternative did not bear thinking about - and would have severely restricted the number of marquee players coming into our game, with disastrous financial consequences.

"The retention of the exemptions panel is hugely significant achievement for Scottish football and also protects the interests of the many Scottish clubs whose business model depends on the import, development and onward sale of overseas players.”
