Rangers and Celtic Old Firm clash sparks extra police patrols in North Ayrshire

Police in North Ayrshire are poised to step up patrols for this weekend's Old Firm clash.

Officers say previous fixtures between Rangers and Celtic have led to anti-social behaviour, minor criminality, hate incidents and vandalism in the region.

Now members of the public are being urged to "demonstrate respect and behave appropriately" ahead of additional patrols being deployed on Sunday afternoon.

Area commander for North Ayrshire, Chief Inspector Alan Paterson, said: “We would appeal to all to behave responsibly.

"We recognise that only a small minority of people have caused issues in the past, however the impact of their actions on the wider community can be significant.”

“On Sunday afternoon, there will be additional patrols in North Ayrshire. We would ask that everyone behaves courteously, respects one another, stays safe, and enjoy the game.”
