Rangers and Celtic given Scottish Cup precedent as EFL announces games will be moved for Prince Philip funeral

The English Football League has announced no matches will be played at 3pm next Saturday to avoid clashing with the funeral of Prince Philip.

The death of the Duke of Edinburgh has had a knock-on effect for football and the SFA dropped a bombshell on Saturday afternoon.

The governing body announced that talks were underway over the Scottish Cup fourth round, with six games to be played on the day of the funeral.

That includes Rangers vs Celtic, which is scheduled to kick-off at 4pm with Prince Philip's funeral at 3.

And the EFL has offered a hint at a possible precedent for British competitions after confirming all 3pm matches will be moved.

A spokesperson said: "As a mark of respect, EFL matches scheduled for 3pm on Saturday April 17 will be moved to avoid a clash with the funeral of HRH Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh.

"The EFL will now work with its clubs to determine at what time the matches will be played, giving consideration to the time of the service.

"An announcement will follow in due course."

The statement does leave the door open for games to be played before or after the funeral, rather than being moved to a different day.

That could be a solution for Rangers and Celtic, with their game due to be shown on Premier Sports.
