Rangers and Celtic fans in Ayrshire raise thousands for cancer charities with 'Old Firm' clash

Rangers and Celtic fans in Ayrshire helped raise thousands of pounds for cancer charities by staging a friendly 'Old Firm' clash.

The event, organised by amateur football outfit Glenafton AFC, was held on Saturday, May 22 in aid of the Beatson Cancer Centre and Sarcoma UK.

And more than £2,000 was raised after the community rallied behind the fundraiser at Greenhead playing field, New Cumnock.

Players volunteered to turn out for their chosen side with both teams kitted out for the occasion.

The match was sponsored to the tune of £500, further boosting the charity coffers.

A post on Glenafton's Facebook page thanked all who took part, adding: "Absolutely incredible, there’s honestly no words can describe how much this means.

"Thank you to everyone who donated, took part in the game and supported the club at the ground."

The club also gave special thanks to Thomas O'Kane for sponsoring the game, match ball sponsor DS Wetwall & Bathrooms, volunteers who kept everyone fed and refreshed, those who helped out with raffle tickets and DJ Scotty T who provided music for the occasion.
