Rangers and Celtic fans face travel warning ahead of Old Firm game at Ibrox

Supporters of Rangers and Celtic have been warned they face travel delays returning from tomorrow's Old Firm clash at Ibrox.

Fans heading back the game through Ayrshire will be hit with a 13 mile diversion due to roadworks on the A77.

Resurfacing work is taking place on the southbound carriageway from Whatriggs overbridge to Craigie Road, Kilmarnock.

The 1.3-mile project is forcing drivers off the main route through Ayrshire at Bellfield Interchange.

The official diversion takes vehicles on to the A71 to the Warrix Interchange at Irvine before travelling south on the A78 coast road, rejoining the A77 at Dutch House roundabout near Monkton.

Scotland TranServ estimate the diversion will add at least 20 minutes to journeys.

Thousands are expected to head to Ibrox from the south west for tomorrow's lunchtime kick-off and road users have been warned to plan ahead.

Adam Sarwar, Scotland TranServ's project design lead, said: "To protect the health and safety of our workers and the travelling public, while minimising the impact of the works on commuters and freight traffic, it will be necessary to implement a full weekend closure of the A77 in this area.

"Scotland TranServ has been working in consultation with local authorities, emergency services and key stakeholders in the planning of this programme.

"In order to complete these works with minimal disruption to commuters and businesses using this busy carriageway, we will work across the weekend."
