Rangers and Celtic fan return blow as lockdown restrictions mean plans likely to be shelved

Plans for spectators to return to football grounds in the coming weeks are looking increasingly unlikely due to COVID-19 lockdown restrictions set to be imposed across the country.

According to the Daily Record, football chiefs fear the new regulations will "derail" their hopes of getting fans back to games any time soon. The report says plans to ask for a test event this weekend have already been shelved.

It was hoped that some supporters would have been able to return to grounds in time for the first Old Firm derby of the season on October 17, however this doesn't look like happening.

It would also cause a headache for lower league clubs whose seasons get underway towards the middle of next month.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon is expected to announce a raft of new COVID-19 lockdown measures following a COBRA meeting this morning. Further information on what these measures involve could be outlined this afternoon.
