Rangers and Celtic face test event KO as coronavirus restrictions block fan return pilot

Celtic and Rangers will not be allowed to host fan test events until local coronavirus restrictions have been lifted in Glasgow.

The Ibrox side's home clash with Dundee United was one of three fixtures earmarked for a supporter return pilot scheme on September 12.

But an increase in positive Covid-19 cases in the Greater Glasgow and Clyde area prompted the Scottish Government to this week reimpose some lockdown rules on the area for at least two weeks.

Holyrood officials are prepared to allow a gradual return of punters to all 12 top-flight grounds if test events are considered a success.

But Rangers will not be allowed to host fans when Micky Mellon's side travel to Ibrox in nine days' time.

The rules, announced by First Minister Nicola Sturgeon on Tuesday, prohibit residents in Glasgow City, East Renfrewshire and West Dunbartonshire from visiting other households.

Celtic's visit to Ross County could still be given the go-ahead in Dingwall but future trial runs are set to depend on whether restrictions remain in place.

The Parkhead club were left frustrated in August when plans to allow a limited number of fans into Celtic Park for a Premiership clash with Motherwell were vetoed.

A government spokesperson told the Daily Mail : "We are engaged with representatives from a range of sporting bodies for a small number of pilot events to examine the feasibility of having spectators in stadia and planning has been underway for a number of months to allow this to happen.

"Discussions are still underway and further updates will be provided to stakeholders in due course but we are clear no proposed test events will take place within the three council areas for the duration of the restrictions."
