Rangers and Celtic earn 'dirtiest derby' crown as fiery fixture leaves English rivalries looking tame

There's really nothing like derby day in Glasgow and it's now been confirmed that the fixture is the dirtiest of all the major inter-city rivalries in the UK.

Whenever Rangers meet Celtic it's a huge occasion, with the fixture no stranger to a hefty tackle or a red card.

The meeting between the Premiership 's big two is frequently named as one of the biggest derbies in world football alongside the likes of River vs Boca Juniors and Roma vs Lazio.

And now new research from bettingexpert has revealed it's the dirtiest of all the UK's major derbies, with matches between Celtic and Rangers over the past decade seeing a total of 12 red cards and 118 yellow cards.

That is significantly higher than the country's friendliest derby - which, perhaps surprisingly, is Liverpool vs Everton - with just three red cards and 86 yellows.

There have been a total of 761 fouls in the fixture since the 2010-11 season, far more than in clashes between Liverpool and Manchester United (558) and Arsenal and Tottenham (615).

A bettingexpert spokesperson said: "The Old Firm Derby is often considered one of the UK’s feistiest derbies and the numbers back that up.

“Conversely, our research has revealed that Liverpool vs Everton is actually the cleanest of the nation’s most famous rivalries.

“A fiery atmosphere is almost a guarantee at Goodison Park on Wednesday evening, but a flurry of cards and bad tackles is less certain.”
