Rangers and Celtic could lose out on Airdrie hot-shot as Dundee United 'bid'

Rangers and Celtic could sensationally be beaten to the signature of Airdrie star Thomas Robert, after Dundee United were rumoured to have tabled a bid.

The 20-year-old midfielder has impressed after joining the Diamonds in the summer, scoring four times in 13 appearances, and Rangers and Celtic scouts have watched on from the stands.

But Airdrie director of football Stuart Millar warned that Robert, the son of French star Laurent, is on a long-term contract at Airdrie.

Millar refused to confirm or deny that United had put in an offer, and said he hasn't dealt with anything like that yet.

But he congratulated the Tannadice club if they have tabled a bid.

Millar said: "I know there is interest from Dundee United, but there is interest from a number of clubs regarding Thomas.

"Thomas is on a long-term contract. If a club is prepared to sign Thomas they've got to bear in mind that his contract is not up at the end of this season, the contract is much longer than that

"But I respect that every club are doing their due diligence and seeing what players are about, so it's good to know that clubs are actually monitoring players like Thomas.

"We've had the Dumbarton game called off this morning, we're trying to arrange training at the stadium, so I've not really dealt with anything like that, but it wouldn't surprise me, because a number of clubs have made enquiries.

"If Dundee United have followed it up with a bid it's something I've not dealt with yet.

"Thomas has a long-term contract at Airdrie, it's not up at the end of the season - contrary to the belief of a number of clubs - and we certainly hope that benefits Airdrie, and Thomas and his career.

"I very much respect Dundee United, if they have made a bid or any other club, then I would congratulate them on doing their recruitment really well.

"It's not known to me yet. No doubt we'll pick up with business when we can. Thomas is on a long-term contract, but I'm delighted and not surprised that clubs are taking a huge interest.

"With the number of clubs who have made enquiries about him, I wouldn't be surprised if they follow it up with a bid."
