Rangers and Celtic Champions League route impacted by major UEFA rule change ahead of playoff bid

UEFA have scrapped the away goals rule for club competitions as Rangers and Celtic look to reach the Champions League group stage.

The decision was made to scrap the half-century old rule with President Aleksander Ceferin insisting it no longer served its purpose of assisting attacking football.

Celtic will face FC Midtjylland in the second round playoff next month, with Rangers still to find out their opponents for the third round fixtures on August 3.

Following the announcement, Ceferin said: "The impact of the rule now runs counter to its original purpose as, in fact, it now dissuades home teams - especially in first legs - from attacking, because they fear conceding a goal that would give their opponents a crucial advantage.

"The away goals rule has been an intrinsic part of UEFA competitions since it was introduced in 1965.

"However, the question of its abolition has been debated at various UEFA meetings over the last few years.

“Although there was no unanimity of views, many coaches, fans and other football stakeholders have questioned its fairness and have expressed a preference for the rule to be abolished."

The rule change will also impact on the Europa League and newly implemented Europa Conference League.
