Rangers and Braga VAR fears as controversial referee takes charge for Europa League clash

Rangers will experience VAR for the first time when they take on Braga on Thursday - and the man watching the images will be doing his first game since sparking controversy in a Spanish league match.

The Gers return to Europa League action tomorrow for the first leg of their last 32 clash, with video technology to be used in the knockout stages.

UEFA has announced that Xavier Estrada Fernández will be the referee for the match, assisted by Teodoro Sobrino Magán and Iñigo Prieto López.

The Spanish team took charge of Celtic's draw with Rennes in the group stage of the competition.

But Rangers' first experience of VAR will be overseen by an official who was dropped for Spanish La Liga games after a highly controversial performance this month.

Jose Maria Sanchez Martinez took charge of Real Betis vs Barcelona and angered both teams with his performance.

He sent off Betis star Nabil Fekir for two yellow cards in a matter of seconds, with the second coming for dissent.

Clement Lenglet was dismissed for Barça, but the hosts were incensed that Sergi Roberto escaped a second yellow for scything down Sergi Roberto.

After the game Betis vice-president Jose Miguel Lopez Catalan said: "We are indignant and angry because once again refereeing has hurt Betis and it has not been fair."

However, Barcelona had their own criticism as Frenkie de Jong insisted a penalty should have been given for a foul on Messi.

The match generated such controversy that Martinez took the unusual step of talking to the media.

He said: "A refereeing career is formed of many personal and professional experiences and the other day was just another day, another experience, another game, and like all games, more or less intense, you always learn things."

Martinez wasn't given a game by the Spanish football federation over the weekend, so his VAR duties at Ibrox will be his first appointment since that controversial clash.

He has been given a Liga match for Sunday and will be in the middle for Osasuna vs Grenada.
