Rangers and Alex Neil links 'no surprise' to Crewe Alexandra boss

Crewe Alexandra boss David Artell says Alex Neil being linked to vacant manager's job at Rangers is 'no surprise'.

Former Hamilton Accies boss Neil accepted a temporary role at the English League One club just before news of Steven Gerrard leaving Ibrox for Aston Villa broke, but he was the early favourite for the job earlier this week.

He has since slipped down the list, with ex-Gers midfielder Giovanni van Bronckhorst now the frontrunner after jetting into London for talks with the Ibrox hierarchy.

But Artell says the former Nowrich City and Preston North End gaffer would be more than capable of taking on the role and says he wouldn't stand in his way if the opportunity presented itself.

Artell told Lancashire Live : "It doesn't surprise me.

"Alex said to me: 'I don't want to let you down. If I'm going to come in, I'm going to come in'.

"I said : 'Don't harm your own career'.

"And he obviously won't, but if something comes up and it floats his boat and he gets it then good luck to him.

"He is a terrific guy and a terrific manager. He's managed in the Scottish Premier League, the Premier League, the Championship - he's managed at a club very similar to ourselves at Hamilton and brought through players.

"He wants to help and he wants to pick up things from us, so why not while he's in between jobs because it can only help."
