Rangers against Motherwell and other Premiership clubs calling to move winter break

Rangers are understood to be against calls to bring forward the Scottish Premiership winter break backed by the likes of Motherwell and Celtic.

On Tuesday the Scottish Government announced new restrictions to curb the rapid spread of the new Omicron Covid variant and this included limiting the number of fans attending sporting events to just 500 spectators for at least the next three weeks from Boxing Day.

It will hit clubs in the pocket with match tickets and hospitality being refunded in huge numbers over the festive period.

And reigning Premiership champions Rangers are reportedly one of only two clubs not in favour of starting the winter shutdown on Boxing Day instead of January 3 in a bid to postpone major fixtures - including the January 2 Old Firm derby.

Ross County are said to be the other clubs from the top flight opposing such a move, according to the Scottish Sun.

Changes to the fixtures would leave Rangers without key players Joe Aribo, Calvin Bassey and Leon Balogun, who are all due to participate in the Africa Cup of Nations late next month.

Celtic led calls to bring forward the winter break and this was echoed by Motherwell chief executive Alan Burrows who said in a statement : "We should start the winter break now, and rearrange these matches when all fans have a chance to attend at a later date when hopefully restrictions are eased."

Currently, matches are set to go ahead in the Premiership as planned.

While the clubs in favour have enough support to green light an extended shutdown, the key factor will be getting broadcasters Sky Sports on board, particularly with Celtic v Rangers set to be beamed live on January 2.

Motherwell are scheduled to host Livingston on Boxing Day and then face trips to Ross County on December 29 and St Mirren on January 2 before the winter break is set to kick in, with clubs due to return on January 21.

The club have already started putting plans in place for a ballot of season ticket holders ahead of an expected decision from the SPFL board today [Wednesday].

A statement by the club read: "A decision on whether to continue with our next cinch Premiership matches is expected to be made by the SPFL board on Wednesday.

"Until then, the club is putting plans in place for a potential ballot of season ticket holders to accommodate 500 fans at our Boxing Day game with Livingston.

"Once a decision has been reached by the SPFL board, we will communicate it immediately.

"If the decision is taken to continue with games in front of a restricted crowd of 500, ballot information will be immediately emailed to season ticket holders.

"The decision of the Scottish Government on Tuesday to restrict numbers due to the Covid-19 pandemic means our next fixture at Fir Park will be played with limited fans, should the SPFL board agree to proceed with games.

"Our forthcoming away matches at Ross County and St Mirren will also be affected."
