Rangers 2 Celtic 0 as Scott Arfield inspires Ibrox side in dominant performance - 5 talking points

Rangers took the spoils after they overcame their rivals 2-0 in the Scottish Premiership.

A dominant performance saw James Tavernier and Scott Arfield strike to down a dismal Celtic at Ibrox on Sunday afternoon.

Steven Gerrard's side started with a sizzling intensity, with Ryan Kent bursting forward on the left only to be clipped as he cut inside.

Tavernier whipped in a teasing ball from the free-kick which evaded everyone and caught Scott Bain flat footed, nestling into the net for the opener as Ibrox erupted.

Jermain Defoe's claim for a penalty was waved away by Kevin Clancy on 20 minutes, much to the frustration of the Rangers fans.

But the reality was the striker had taken too much time looking for an opening before jumping into the air under pressure from Kristoffer Ajer.

Bain had to be alert to deny Arfield in stoppage time of the first half, after yet another driving run from Kent.

The on-loan winger showed the composure to pick out his team-mate with an incisive through ball but the Celtic goalkeeper was quick off his line to avert the danger.

Connor Goldson was next to go close as he jumped higher than Odsonne Edouard, only to direct his powerful header on to the roof of the net.

Rangers star Jon Flanagan escapes red card after Scott Brown is hit with forearm smash

The first flashpoint of the second half came as Rangers defender a corner when Jon Flanagan pushed his forearm into the face of Scott Brown.

The Celtic captain hit the deck, leading Clancy to book Flanagan.

The referee appeared to recognise that it was a foul - inside the box - but didn't give a penalty.

Arfield doubled the home side's lead after excellent midfield play from Glen Kamara, whose delicate pass was dummied by Defoe.

The relentless Arfield raced on to the ball to slide an effort beyond Bain and make it 2-0.

Jermain Defoe was unlucky not to make it three as he burst clear in the latter stages, seeing his driven effort palmed away by Bain.

The ball returned to the veteran striker who did well to angle a chipped effort back at goal, which clipped the bar before the danger was cleared.

Celtic had a fantastic opportunity to pull themselves back into the game as Edouard showed the initiative to create space on the left.

He dragged a ball across but Oli Burke's effort lacked power and Foderingham produced a strong save to push the ball away.

Rangers were comfortable in possession as they saw out the remaining minutes of a frenetic clash between the fierce rivals.

Dead ball danger

Once again the Rangers captain showed his ability in dead-ball situations. When he stands over the ball in a set-piece situation, you expect him to cause problems... and he did just that.

Tavernier whipped the ball into a dangerous area for the first and because of that Celtic were caught out and the home side were given an early lead. Around 68 minutes, he stood over the ball again and with a bit more accuracy, he could've netted his second of the afternoon.

A tale of two wingers

Ryan Kent holds off Celtic's Mikey Johnston (SNS Group)

Mikey Johnston starred and scored in the young Hoops' dramatic 3-2 Glasgow Cup win over Rangers 12 days ago. Neil Lennon gave the 20-year-old the nod to start against Rangers but the winger struggled to impact proceedings for much of the match.

Much of that was down to the Celtic midfield's poor use of the ball as they struggled to feed the ball into the wide areas.

Johnston was hooked for Scott Sinclair after 64 minutes. On the other hand his counterpart Kent continually showed his desire to get on the ball and stretch the Celtic backline, asking countless questions throughout the 90.

No Celtic penalty

Referee Kevin Clancy during the Old Firm clash at Ibrox (SNS Group)

It was a bit of a head scratcher as Rangers defender a corner. When the ball came in Flanagan appeared to foul Brown by pushing an arm into his face. Ref Clancy acknowledged the incident by showing the former Liverpool defender a yellow card but didn't order anything else, other than retake of the corner.

Flanagan was desperately lucky not to be sent off and perhaps a penalty should have been given. However Clancy appeared to judge that the ball was not in play and therefore no penalty should be awarded.

An able deputy

(SNS Group)

It was the stand-in goalkeeper's first start since playing in the 5-0 Scottish Cup win over Kilmarnock in late February.

Foderingham, who was making just his third Premiership appearance of the season, took the place of the suspended Allan McGregor. The Englishman, who has previously said sitting on the sidelines is "not ideal", stepped up to the plate and looked comfortable on the big occasion considering his lack of football this season, making a strong save late on.

Perhaps it was a timely reminder for the keeper that he ought to be looking for first team football.

What now for Lennon?

It's difficult to tell whether that result will put a dent in the manager's hopes to land the job on a permanent basis.

Neil Lennon's team seemed devoid of composure, direction and creativity on this occasion. They will have to do much better than that in their remaining matches this season - and take home the Scottish Cup - if Lennon is to get his hands on the job full time.
