Barry Coastguard said it and South Wales Police also attended and  checked the driver and the vehicle.

But the only way to move the vehicle was to phone a recovery truck.

A Barry Coastguard spokesman said: "Due to the position of it, The only way it would get back up was with the aid of a recovery truck.

"The vehicle was re positioned back on the road way for the owner to make arrangements for it to be moved."

A crowd of onlookers gathered around expressing bemusement at the incident.

One said: "It's a really odd thing to do, to take a car onto the beach - even a Range Rover. The driver was quite lucky the recovery truck pulled out. It would have a been a different story had the tide come in."
