In MLB The Show, few pitchers have been as dominant as Randy Johnson has been over the years. Equipped with a funky delivery, blistering fast 4-seamer, and a nasty slider, the Big Unit has always been one of the most sought-after cards in MLB The Show year after year, and MLB The Show 25 is no exception.
To date, Johnson has only received two cards in MLB The Show 25. The first was a 79-rated Contributor card that was given to players upon reaching the first milestone in the Seattle Mariners Team Affinity path. The other was a 91-rated 2nd Half Heroes card that was much more dominant and had much better longevity than the previous one, especially in a Ranked setting.
But now, San Diego Studio has announced that a high-powered Randy card will once again be entering the Diamond Dynasty ecosystem. And though there’s still more to learn about it, it is expected to be an endgame-quality card.
MLB The Show 25 Announces 99-Rated Randy Johnson As One Of Two Weekend Classic Rewards
Today is a big day for MLB The Show 25 Diamond Dynasty players who are interested in the mode’s endgame content. For one, the 7th Inning Program will be revealed later today, though it will likely be released early next week. Another big development is that Weekend Classic will be starting back up tonight, and 99-rated Randy Johnson is one of the two reward cards up for grabs. The second reward card will be revealed live on stream this afternoon.
This particular Randy Johnson card commemorates the Big Unit’s 1995 Cy Young-winning season with the Seattle Mariners. During that season, Johnson was close to unhittable, posting a 2.48 ERA, 1.045 WHIP, 193 ERA+, 2.08 FIP, and an 8.6 WAR, most of which ended up being career-highs. So, it’s certainly a season worth remembering.
A big source of discussion has revolved around what this 99-rated Johnson’s pitch mix will be. Historically speaking, Johnson has mostly had an outlier 4-seamer, slider, slurve, splitter, and a 2-seamer. Though not quite meta on paper, Johnson’s 6’10 frame, sidearm mechanics, and devastating fastball have been mostly enough to keep most hitters silent. However, if SDS really wants to make this card truly over-the-top, the 2-seamer can be replaced with a sinker. And should that be added to Johnson’s arsenal, he might be truly untouchable. One thing we can reasonably assume, however, is that the Big Unit will throw heat, but not have great location, as control was something he always struggled with, even at the peak of his career.
