The email subject read: "Some of us live in Canberra, how lucky are we".

A reader sent in a lovely example of the everyday humanity that thrives in the national capital.

"I was on my way home this evening, and I found this little treasure left by another of our city's inhabitants," he wrote.

"How beautiful that they had taken the time to present this book as a gift. It will be my first John Grisham book in many years and I very much look forward to reading it. I will make sure that I provide such an opportunity for someone else; though given my young children, it may or may not be the same book.

"....The gift was received with great appreciation and thanks for the kindness of the anonymous person that left the book."

Leaving free books in public places has become a thing around the world in recent years, fostering a love of the written word, community connectedness and random acts of kindness.
