Ranchi: Kolkata crime branch seizes documents from lawyer’s home

RANCHI: A crime branch team from Kolkata on Friday seized several bank passbooks, electronic devices, documents related to PILs and property documents during raids carried out in the house of high court advocate Rajiv Kumar in Ranchi.

The raids, which began at around 4 pm on Thursday, continued for eight hours at his Gauri Shankar Nagar residence under the Argora police station and in his brother’s rice mill in Tupudana area.

Police said Kumar was caught red-handed in Kolkata on July 31 with a sum of Rs 50 lakh, which he allegedly took from a businessman for withdrawing a PIL lodged against him at the Jharkhand High Court.

Kumar’s wife Sharmila Singh on Friday issued a written statement on plain paper, admitting the visit of Kolkata crime branch officials at their house for a brief period on Friday and also about questioning.

In her missive addressed to certain media houses she countered the reports of recovery. “Instead of 16 flats, our house on a 3.5 cottah plot has 16 rooms. We don’t have any farmhouses, instead an agricultural plot and the diary has details of domestic expenses,” the note reads.
