Ranas may meet Amit Shah, Lok Sabha speaker, demand action against Shiv Sena leaders

MUMBAI: Independent MP Navneet Rana and her husband, MLA Ravi Rana, said on Sunday they will be going to Delhi to complain about the inhuman treatment meted out to them in jail. They are likely to meet home minister Amit Shah and Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, said political watchers.

“We will demand action against Sena leaders such as Sanjay Raut, Anil Parab and the CM himself for the cases of corruption being probed by central agencies,” said Ravi.

Navneet told mediapersons: “The Thackeray government has played vendetta politics against us for reciting the Hanuman Chalisa. You have got the CM position because of your ancestors’ name. If they really want to know who the public supports, I challenge him to contest elections against me. He can pick any district in the state to contest. What crime did we commit to be sent to jail? For chanting Ram and Hanuman’s names? For this mistake we were sent to jail for 14 days. I will repeat the mistake again and again even if I am sent to jail for 14 years,” said Navneet.

On being asked about the BMC notice to the couple’s flat in Khar, Navneet said even if her house is demolished, she will chant Hanuman and Ram’s names from the streets. “By doing all this, the Thackeray government cannot silence me. This incident and the atrocities done to me inside the jail have only made me stronger,” said Navneet.

Special public prosecutor Pradeep Gharat told TOI: “The couple has committed a breach of conditions which had been imposed on them while granting bail. It is so mentioned in the bail order that if they violate any of the conditions which have been imposed on them, the bail granted to them shall stand automatically cancelled.”

Rizwan Merchant, advocate for the couple, said, “In matters where they need to move for cancellation, they don’t budge an inch, and in such matters, they do it only because it’s laced with political vendetta and motivation.” Navneet was admitted to Lilavati Hospital for aggravated back and neck ache after her release.
