Ramzan fasting: Pediatrician's essential guidelines for children

During the sacred month of Ramadan, families are buzzing with excitement as this time holds immense significance for spiritual enlightenment. Especially among children who eagerly choose to participate in the fasting ritual. However, it is crucial that we prioritize their health and well-being above all else.

Pediatricians strongly advise against children under the age of 10 fasting during Ramadan, as their growing bodies require a consistent intake of nutrients. For older children who do fast, it is essential to follow specific guidelines and tips to ensure a safe and smooth fasting experience while minimizing any potential health risks.

First and foremost, children who fast must maintain a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains to ensure they receive the necessary nutrients. Emphasizing the importance of a nutritious pre-dawn meal (sehri) and a meal to break the fast (iftar) is crucial to sustaining their energy levels throughout the day.

Hydration is crucial during fasting hours, so it is vital to encourage children to drink plenty of water and hydrating fluids during non-fasting hours to prevent dehydration. Options such as coconut water, fruit juices, and milk are excellent choices to replenish fluids and electrolytes. Adequate rest and sleep are essential for children fasting during Ramadan. Ensuring they maintain a healthy sleep schedule by going to bed early and waking up for suhoor will help them feel refreshed and energized throughout the day.

In addition to these physical considerations, parents should offer unwavering encouragement and emotional support to children fasting during Ramadan. Listening to their concerns, praising their efforts, and providing reassurance during challenging moments will create a supportive environment that fosters a positive fasting experience.

Open communication is key when it comes to fasting. Addressing any questions or concerns your children may have and providing clear guidance will help them feel confident and excited about participating in this special time of year. Let's make this Ramadan a memorable and fulfilling experience for our children!
