Ramsey and Woods jostle for No. 2 jersey after Rams tease single-digit numbers

The Kansas City Chiefs proposed a rule change to the NFL this year which loosen the league’s restrictions on what jersey numbers players at certain positions can wear. For example, wide receivers can only wear Nos. 10-19 and 80-89 right now, but the new rule would allow them to wear anything from 1-49, as well as 80-89. The same would go for running backs and tight ends, while defensive backs could wear 1-49. Linebackers could add Nos. 1-39 to their options, too.

According to Peter King of NBC Sports, owners are likely to approve this proposal, which would likely open the floodgates for players to change their jersey numbers, many of whom would probably consider going back to their college numbers.

The Rams posted photoshopped images of Darious Williams, Robert Woods, Cam Akers and Jalen Ramsey wearing their college numbers (1, 2, 3 and 8, respectively) on Instagram and players weighed in in the comments.

Ramsey said recently that he wouldn’t wear No. 8 unless he was playing with Derwin James, but he has his eye on No. 2. Only, he forgot Woods wore that number in college.

Ramsey commented:

“I’m sorry @robertw10ds but I definitely need that 2 lol”

He also asked for help from the fans on Twitter, telling them to let Woods know his current number, 17, is great.

Woods doesn’t seem interested in giving up his college number, though.

“Na you never even wore that number bro. Jalen 8.0 😂”

Kicker Matt Gay, who wore No. 1 with the Rams last season, bid farewell to his jersey number after the team teased Williams in his college number.

“🥲🥲🥲🥲 bye #1

Johnny Hekker got in on the fun, offering to auction off his No. 6 jersey to whoever wants it – though he’s likely joking.

“I’ll auction off 6!! Who wants it!”

We’ll have to wait and see if Ramsey, Woods, or any other players switch their jersey numbers, but Ramsey seems serious about getting No. 2. If he does switch, there would probably be some upset fans who just bought his No. 20 jersey, but at least it’s not too far off from his current number.
