Rams win NFC West for 3rd time under Sean McVay – albeit, in bittersweet fashion

The Los Angeles Rams were crowned NFC West champions on Sunday, but it’s highly unlikely that anyone in their locker room was wearing celebratory gear after their 27-24 loss to the San Francisco 49ers in overtime.

The Rams only won the West because the Seattle Seahawks upset the Arizona Cardinals, which handed the division to Los Angeles despite its loss to the 49ers at home. It’s a bittersweet accomplishment, and not at all the way the Rams would’ve liked to clinch the division.

  1. Rams (12-5)
  2. Cardinals (11-6)
  3. 49ers (10-7)
  4. Seahawks (6-10)

It’s their third NFC West title in five years under Sean McVay, an incredible accomplishment for a team that didn’t win the division a single time from 2004-2016. McVay wasn’t pleased after the game and was brief with the media, but he should feel good about the job he’s done with this team since taking over as head coach in 2017.

In the regular season, McVay owns a 55-26 career record, winning at least 10 games four times and finishing above .500 in each of his five seasons. Needless to say, he’s proved the Rams right by making him the youngest head coach in NFL history.
