Rams will bring in K Matt Gay to compete with Austin MacGinnis

It’s been a revolving door for the Rams at kicker this season, cycling through players at that position after nearly a decade of steady play from Greg Zuerlein. Kai Forbath was signed off the Bears’ practice squad to replace the struggling Samuel Sloman, but now Forbath is out of the picture.

He injured his ankle in Sunday’s win over the Seahawks and will be placed on injured reserve, Sean McVay said Monday. Austin MacGinnis, who’s on the practice squad, will get a chance to replace him but it won’t be without earning the job first.

McVay said the team is bringing in second-year kicker Matt Gay to compete with MacGinnis.

Due to COVID-19 protocols, Gay won’t be able to practice with the Rams until Saturday at the earliest. They don’t play until Monday night, so there is one extra day for this competition to sort itself out, but MacGinnis clearly has the advantage based on the fact that he’s been with the team for a few weeks.

Gay, 26, made his NFL debut with the Buccaneers last season after being a fifth-round pick in the 2019 draft. He went 27-for-35 on field goal attempts, while also making 43 of 48 PATs.

He has a big leg, making a career-long of 58 yards, but accuracy has been a concern up to this point.
