Rams' Todd Gurley is NFL's offensive rookie of the year

Feb. 07--SAN FRANCISCO -- The Rams will arrive in the Los Angeles for the 2016 season with an award-winning running back.

Todd Gurley continued his postseason haul Saturday when he was announced as the Associated Press NFL offensive rookie of the year. The announcement was made during the league's "NFL Honors" show.

Gurley rushed for 1,106 yards and 10 touchdowns in 13 games for a team that finished 7-9.

Gurley, 21, had suffered a season-ending knee injury while playing at Georgia in 2014, but the Rams selected him with the 10th pick in the 2015 draft. He ran for more than 100 yards five times this season and had a season-best 159 yards in 30 carries against the Green Bay Packers on Oct. 11 at Lambeau Field.

Gurley was emotional as he mentioned coming back from his injury. And at the end of his speech, he referenced the Rams' impending move to Los Angeles.

"I just want to say something to the St. Louis fans: I know you all might be disappointed that we might be leaving but, you know, it's out of our control," Gurley said.

In the voting for the award, Gurley finished ahead of Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston, the top pick in the draft, and Oakland Raiders receiver Amari Cooper.

"Todd is such a special player and person who is truly deserving of this honor," Rams Coach Jeff Fisher said in a statement. "He worked extremely hard to get back to the field and put together one of the best rookie performances that we've seen in a long time."

Gurley played in the Pro Bowl last week. He also won Pro Football Writers of America awards for rookie of the year and offensive rookie of the year.
