Rams sign punter Brock Miller ahead of preseason opener

Sean McVay likes to protect his best players by limiting their workload during camp and the preseason, but that doesn’t only apply to the offense and defense. That also includes special teams.

On Tuesday, the Rams announced that they have signed punter Brock Miller in advance of their first preseason game this weekend. Miller won’t be competition for four-time All-Pro Johnny Hekker, acting more as a fill-in during the preseason to keep Hekker’s leg fresh.

Miller, a left-footed punter, went undrafted in 2014 out of Southern Utah and has bounced around a couple different practice squads since. He was signed to a futures contract by the 49ers back in January 2017 but was cut in May. He then latched on with the Giants, joining their practice squad last December but was cut in January.

He has yet to play a regular-season game, but this preseason, Miller will have a chance to both punt and kick field goals.

Being a lefty, it’ll give the Rams’ punt returners a different look than the right-footed Hekker’s punts, too.
