Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo has signed with the Los Angeles Rams as the backup to Matthew Stafford. Safety Kamren Curl also agreed to terms on a two-year contract with the Rams on Friday.

Garoppolo, released by the Las Vegas Raiders after one season, is known for his time with the San Francisco 49ers, where he had success against the Rams. Rams coach Sean McVay has praised Garoppolo and now he will serve as the primary backup to Stafford.

Garoppolo struggled last season with the Raiders, making six starts before being benched. He also received a two-game suspension for violating the league's policy on performance-enhancing drugs.

Garoppolo had his best years in San Francisco under Kyle Shanahan, making 55 starts for the Niners. He is the most accomplished quarterback signed as a backup during McVay's tenure with the Rams.

Kamren Curl, previously with the Washington Commanders, signed a two-year deal with the Rams. He is known for his versatility in playing both safety spots and taking on linebacker responsibilities.

Curl's deal is worth $8.75 million and could reach $12.75 million based on performance. He had a career-high 115 tackles last season and could potentially replace Jordan Fuller, who is signing with the Carolina Panthers.

The Rams defense, which has added cornerback Darious Williams in free agency, is also dealing with the retirement of star defensive tackle Aaron Donald. The defense will have a new coordinator in Chris Shula, replacing Raheem Morris.
