With the recent news of both GM Les Snead and head coach Sean McVay receiving contract extensions, Rams fans have been wondering about the next person in line for an extension: quarterback Jared Goff. Snead was quick to reiterate that it’s a matter of when, not if, Goff receives his big payday.
This isn’t the first time the Rams have asserted their commitment to Goff this offseason, and it likely won’t be the last. Snead’s statement echoed McVay’s words on the topic last month, when he stated “That extension will get done. It’s a matter of when, not if.”
The team had little reason to extend Goff this summer and was under no pressure from Goff’s camp to get something done. Les Snead has taken care of his guys when it comes to contract extensions in the past. With the exception of Greg Robinson, every first-round pick Snead has made received a contract extension (yes, even him).
Don’t expect to see Goff throwing passes in another uniform anytime soon. The Rams picked up his fifth-year option and have the ability to give him the franchise tag, should talks fall apart on extension next year. He’ll be quarterbacking the Rams for the foreseeable future, at the very least.
