Rams pick up Jared Goff’s 5th-year option for 2020

Jared Goff will be the Los Angeles Rams’ quarterback for at least the next two seasons – barring a major injury or change. General manager Les Snead announced on Tuesday at the team’s pre-draft press conference that the Rams have exercised Goff’s fifth-year option for 2020.

They had until early May to make that decision, but there was no sense waiting to make the inevitable official.

Sean McVay reiterated the high praise that Snead gave Goff, saying he’s looking forward to working with the young quarterback for many years to come.

Goff’s cap hit will jump from $8.9 million in 2019 to $22.73 million in 2020, according to Spotrac. That number becomes fully guaranteed at the start of the new league year in 2020, but prior to that point, the Rams can cut ties with Goff and not incur any dead money.

Every first-round pick has a fifth-year option attached to his contract, giving the team another year of control at a very reasonable cost. That being said, Goff’s price tag is set to spike, which could limit the Rams’ free agency plans in 2020.

Goff was the No. 1 overall pick in 2016 after the Rams traded up to select him. In his career, he has 65 touchdown passes, 26 interceptions and 9,581 yards with two Pro Bowl selections.
