Rams officially announce Liam Coen as new offensive coordinator

A move that was reported over a week ago is now official: Liam Coen will be the Los Angeles Rams’ new offensive coordinator.

The Rams announced Wednesday that they’ve hired Coen to replace Kevin O’Connell, bringing him back to L.A. after he spent a year on Kentucky’s coaching staff.

Coen was the Rams’ assistant wide receivers coach in 2018 and 2019 before being promoted to assistant QBs coach in 2020. Kentucky hired him as its offensive coordinator and QBs coach last year, a move that immediately paid dividends.

The Wildcats finished the season 10-3 and ranked 19th in yards per play (6.41), in large part thanks to the arrival of Coen. He was a hot coaching candidate this offseason after helping turn around Kentucky’s offense, drawing interest from the University of Miami and the New Orleans Saints; he turned down interviews with both.

Coen is the latest offensive coordinator on McVay’s staff and likely the next in line to potentially become a head coach in the future just as O’Connell and Matt LaFleur have.
