Rodger Saffold says goodbye to Rams after being deemed ‘too expensive’

It appears the Los Angeles Rams are gearing up to move on from left guard Rodger Saffold. The stud offensive lineman is set to become a free agent on Wednesday at the start of the new league year and most likely won’t be back with the Rams in 2019.

Les Snead said on Tuesday after Eric Weddle’s introductory press conference that Saffold is “going to be too expensive” for the Rams as of now. Things can obviously change, but considering the fact that he’s expected to have a strong market, it’s unlikely Saffold returns.

Add in the fact that Saffold went back to the team’s headquarters to say goodbye to teammates and coaches, and it’s all but certain he’ll be signing elsewhere relatively soon.

If Saffold does indeed sign with another team, that’ll leave the Rams with two voids on the offensive line. John Sullivan had his option declined for 2019, making him a free agent, as well.

Joseph Noteboom, the Rams’ third-round pick last year, is expected to replace Saffold at left guard, with fellow 2018 draftee Brian Allen filling in for Sullivan at center.

Saffold is the longest-tenured member of the Rams, spending the last nine years with the team. He was selected in the second round of the 2010 draft, going 33rd overall out of Indiana.

He had injury concerns earlier in his career but has missed just two games total in the last three years, one of which was for rest in Week 17 of 2017.
