Rams hosted Alabama safety Deionte Thompson for visit

The Los Angeles Rams aren’t in dire need of a safety in the upcoming draft, but they’re doing extensive work on players at the position. Having already hosted players like Juan Thornhill, Johnathan Abram and Darnell Savage, the Rams brought in another top safety on Tuesday.

Alabama’s Deionte Thompson posted a photo of the Rams’ facility on his Instagram story, taking a visit with the team ahead of the draft.

Thompson was once viewed as the best free safety in the class, but his stock has taken a hit ever since. He struggles against the run and has issues tackling, while he also gambles at times in coverage.

Those inconsistencies paired with recent injuries have caused him to slide down draft boards, likely out of the first round. He suffered a wrist injury back in February that required surgery and forced him to miss the combine, as well as Alabama’s pro day.

For the Rams, Thompson would likely be a trade-back target in the second round, considering it’s fairly unlikely he’ll make it to their third-round picks at No. 94 and 99. Taking him in Round 1 would be a reach, especially if there are better offensive linemen, safeties or defensive linemen on the board.
